Gerry Rodeo News - June 2021

GERRY – The Gerry Fire Department has voted to open the gates for their 76th annual PRCA rodeo for four performances, August 4-7. Rodeo chairman Tom Atwell says that the decision is due to restrictions related to the pandemic slowly being lifted, making it possible, under State regulations at that time, to safely bring professional rodeo back to the area after a year’s absence under State regulations in effect at that time

Painted Pony Championship Rodeo of Lake Lucerne, New York, will again be bringing more than 100 head of their stock to challenge the more than 200 contestants from across the country who will be competing for $50,000 in prize money. A new event, cowgirls’ breakaway roping, is being added to the seven traditional events – saddle bronc and bareback bronc riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, bull riding, and cowgirls’ barrel racing.

Greg Simas, one of the nation’s top rodeo announcers, who is presently announcing rodeos across the Southwest, is returning for his ninth year to keep the action moving in the arena from his seat on horseback. Adding to the festivities is the return of Rodeo Hall of Fame funnyman Keith Isley, who has been named Comedy Act of the Year on numerous occasions. Crowd favorite bullfighter Phil Hussman will again be risking his own safety to protect the cowboys in the bull riding.

Atwell says he expects a larger number of contestants this year since there were so many rodeos cancelled last year, and those cowboys and cowgirls are trying to make as many rodeos as possible to make up for last year’s losses.

The traditional barbeque beef dinners will continue to be a part of this year’s event although Atwell says some modifications may have to be made depending on State regulations at the time. He further adds that the rodeo committee will have to put in much extra effort and time due to the late decision, but he is sure that many volunteers will “pitch in” to get everything ready to make this a real celebration and one of the best rodeos yet.

The brochures with prices and related information are currently being printed and will soon be available at various location as well as on-line at the rodeo website www.gerryrodeo.org. Information is also available by phone at (716) 985-4847 or
